DOOM WTF! FIVE MODERN SLUDGE BANDS PUSHING THE GENRE FORWARD! FROM CVLT NATION

Sweet review of the Basic Instinct album “Late Bloom” from CVLT Nation.

BASIC INSTINCT LATE BLOOM

What you are about to hear is HEAVY Magic in the form of Sludge. BASIC INSTINCT have created a record that gives me chills but at the same time frightens me. What I do know about this band is that are using this art form to manifest music that has a message of protest and they stand for issues that matter to us all. The vocals on late LATE BLOOM soar at times and at other times they peel your skin off slowly. It is such an honor to turn y’all to BASIC INSTINCT because they are so SICK!!!

WTF! Five Modern SLUDGE bands pushing the genre FORWARD!

Basic Instinct invites you to listen to our new album, “Late Bloom” We recorded this album in the fall of 2018 at The Balloon Factory with Joshua Wells.

Basic Instinct had been playing shows since 2016 in Vancouver BC. Carly was moving to Los Angeles, so we decided to write and record an album before she left. We spent a month in the jam space writing this material, some of which has never been performed live.

We would love for you to take a listen to the album here!

Featuring Marta McKeever (Fan Death, Girl Nobody) on vocals and piano, Diona Davies (Geoff Berner, Carolyn Mark, Po’ Girl) on violin and harmonies, Tess Kitchen (Wintermitts) on trumpet and harmonies and Joy Mullen (Cris Derksen, Fortresses) on drums, this band of women have been together since 2005. This is the release show for the “Heart Contact” EP will be released on Rae Spoon’s label Coax Records. E.S.L.’s debut album “Eye Contact”, was a huge success and landed them gigs at Folk Festivals all over Canada.

Veering wildly between Polish cabaret and chamber pop, to playful hip hop jams, e.s.l. spin songs that will catch your ear and entangle you in their spell. Ethereal vocal harmonies might evoke a late-night bar, with booty shaking beats, bold horns, lush string lines and no-holds-barred lyrics that convey a heartfelt reflection on life.

BC Musician Magazine- Music Teachers #1- Noah Walker and Sarah Wheeler

Here is a new series I am working on for BC Musician Magazine that talks to musicians who teach music. The past 2 years I have been working as a full time 1 on 1 drum teacher and it has hugely rewarding and fascinating. Already I can see how the teaching practice is constantly evolving and while some may find it draining, I find it energizing.

This first article talks to 2 private one on one music teachers, Noah Walker and Sarah Wheeler.
