She Noise – A look at life as a musician

New Series For BC Musician Magazine

Here is a new series I am working on for BC Musician Magazine that talks to musicians who teach music. The past 2 years I have been working as a full time 1 on 1 drum teacher and it has hugely rewarding and fascinating. Already I can see how the teaching practice is constantly evolving and while some may find it draining, I find it energizing.

BC Drummers Part 3

Here is the third installment of a series I wrote for BC Musician Magazine. I talk to two BC drummers who have toured BC.  In this article we talk to Anju Singh and Nick Yacyshyn.

BC Drummers Part 2

Here is the second instalment of BC Drummers for BC Musician Magazine. This article talks to folk/rock/country drummers Rad Juli and Leon Power. These hardworking drummers tour BC on a regular basis and have worked with many artists over the years.

BC Drummers Part 1

Here is a new series of articles I am writing for BC Musician Magazine. It features 2 drummers (1 female, 1 male) in a genre. This first article talks to jazz and experimental drummers Mili Hong and Ben Brown. I had the opportunity to work with both of these drummers on a project called “We’re Making A Band” and it was part of Justine Chambers residency at the Scotia Bank Dance Centre. The project focused on research of bodies moving while drumming. Mili is an incredible jazz drummer and Ben is daring and exploratory experimental drummer.

Fortresses Cassette Release

Super stoked to be announcing a new project that I have started called Fortresses. We are a Vancouver based psych post punk project with the super dream team of Ora Cogan on synth and vocals and Matt Duiry from Summering on guitar.  We accidentally became a band after Ora Cogan asked Matt and I to back her up for a solo show at Big Joy Fest- a Vancouver experimental festival. We all loved playing together so much, we decided to make it official! Ora and I had been talking about starting a project together and had a few initial jam sessions, but adding Matt to the mix finalized our vision of a project together. The band worked hard for 3 months, writing, rehearsing and booking shows. In March we recorded our self titled ep at Craft Cave Sounds with Justin Aucoin. Isolated Now Waves, Vancouver tape label will be releasing the album.

BC Instrument Builders Articles in BC Musician Magazine

BCmusicianmag#1It has been a lot of fun to work on this 3 part series for BC Musician Magazine. There are many talented builders that are working locally to produce quality instruments. This first article is about my dad, Bill Machuga, who not only was the person who taught me how to play drums, but also a builder of fine hand drums. Check out the article to learn more about his company Goldline Drums. muscian mag cover
